Blogging is about Linking: 5 Reasons to Link

I recently read Top 10 tips for New Bloggers, a very interesting article and recommended reading, even if you're not so new to blogging. When I reached 6th tip I felt compelled to write a post in my own blog about it.

In tip number 6, "Everyone will trade links with you!", Jason says: "text links are worth cash-ola to bloggers now and giving them away just for the fun of it doesn’t happen as much". It's sad but it seems to be true. I've read a few posts containing no links at all, even though there are references to articles in other websites, no links.

If you're thinking that a blog post without links to other blogs it's a good idea, think twice. Some thinks that linking to someone else's blog is bad because it will send traffic to competitors. However, that's not true.

Here are five reasons why you should link:
  1. Links add value to your post. You can provide more information to your readers while keeping your post short by linking to other articles. So, that extra information remain optional for those wanting to learn more about a specific subject. People prefer this kind of article and might bookmark your post as a valuable resource list.
  2. You might receive a link back. Some nice bloggers will link back to your blog. I bet you like links.
  3. They're good for networking. Linking to other blogs is a way to make friends. See "Networking within your Blog Niche: 7 Essential Tips for Bloggers", another good reading.
  4. Readers will find other blogs anyway. Have you heard of search engines? It doesn't matter if you link to other blogs or not, people can reach those blogs through search engines or social networks. And remember, people tend to like websites that links to other sites. See reason 1.
  5. Search engines like outgoing links. There's some controversy about this, but it seems that outgoing links are good for search engine ranking, provided you link to high quality, topically related sites. Be careful to not become part of a link farm, though.
So, start linking right now! Are you linking already? Well, do link more :-)
